(LUTHERAN BACH ENSEMBLE)

Purpose
The purpose of the Lutheran Bach Ensemble Foundation [LBE] is the performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and that of composers whose music has a relationship to Bach’s. The LBE will perform three or four different programs during the season, alternating works with a chamber musical character with those requiring larger forces. The intention is to work mostly with ensembles using period instruments. The LBE hass with a core of permanent singers and instrumentalists, but by working as a project-choir, new performers will also have the opportunity of taking part.
A permanent part of the programming wil be the cantata services of the Lutheran Church in Groningen. The Lutheran aspect of this music will be strengthened by its performance of the Lutheran Bach’s music within the classical Lutheran liturgy. Further, the permanent rehearsal venue for the LBE is in the Groningen Lutheran church itself.

In practice
The choir of the LBE consists of experienced and trained singers. The instrumentalists and soloists are professionals. The participants in each program will be determined by the requirements of the works to be performed. The group for each program will rehearse intensively for several months and then do several performances. Performers are expected to know their parts at the first rehearsal, which will allow the director to work on artistic and performance-practice matters from the beginning.

Auditions
The first requirement for singers in the LBE is that they have trained voices and have the ability to learn their parts on their own. Selection for the ensemble will take place through an audition with the Artistic Director and the permanent accompanist. Depending upon the number of auditions, the candidate will hear within two weeks avbout his or her appointment to the choir. In all cases, each singer must re-audition every three years. The choir of the LBE is a project-choir, which means that performers for each project will be assembled based upon the requirements of the music to be performed. Each new member of the ensemble wil come automatically into the database of the LBE, which means that he or she will be invited to take part in each new project and be informed at the same time of the rehearsal dates and performance times and places. It is assumed that each singer will attend all the rehearsals.
